The band The Baseball Project will debut their new song, "Pete Rose Way," on Saturday in, appropriately, Cincinnati, according to CityBeat.

The Baseball Project is a side project of musicians Scott McCaughey (Young Fresh Fellows, Minus 5), Peter Buck (R.E.M.), Steve Wynn (Dream Syndicate, Gutterball) and Linda Pitmon (Steve Wynn IV) that released the baseball-themed "Volume 1: Frozen Ropes and Dying Quails" last year.

The album features songs such as "Satchel Paige Said," "Fernando" (not the Abba song, but about the former Dodgers pitcher Valenzuela), "Sometimes I Dream Of Willie Mays" and another with Ted Williams' name and profanity in the title that we can't print here. They fondly look at famous characters, paying tribute to baseball history with an alternative-rock edge.

McCaughey told CityBeat that "Pete Rose Way," which was recorded earlier this week for "Vol. 2," is a double entendre for the road in Cincinnati and the all-time hits leader's "Charlie Hustle" style of play.

"It doesn't come down on Pete; it's actually a favorable song. I don't take him to task for betting on baseball and being a liar," McCaughey told CityBeat. It's more a reflection on the kind of player he was and that there's a lot to be learned from that. And also that there's something to be learned from the mistakes he made, although that's referred to very lightly."

The Baseball Project is on tour until Oct. 1. But if you can't make any of the remaining shows, check out their performance of "Past Time" on "The Late Show With David Letterman" last year.
