Andrews on IR with back problem

The Philadelphia Eagles have placed two-time Pro Bowl offensive lineman Shawn Andrews on the injured reserve list due to his persistent back problem in order to make room for quarterback Jeff Garcia, who was signed Monday.

The Eagles tried to trade wide receivers Hank Baskett and Reggie Brown in the last week and a half, but were unsuccessful. In the end, they just did not want to part with either player without getting something in return.

The decision to put Andrews on season-ending IR means the team is thin at offensive tackle, and may have to seek another tackle in the coming weeks. More roster moves will be made by the Eagles once Michael Vick is put on the active roster in preparation for Week 3. Vick is eligible to play again that week, when the Eagles are home against the Chiefs.

"It's disappointing to lose any player for the entire season, but we have full confidence in the other lineman we have on this roster to help this team succeed," Eagles coach Andy Reid said. "We wish Shawn all the best as he recovers and rehabilitates from this injury."

Andrews missed the entire preseason and season opener with a back injury. He briefly returned to practice, but his surgically repaired back flared up again.

Andrews practiced early last week in preparation for Philadelphia's game against Carolina. He called himself a "beast" and seemed excited about trying to block Julius Peppers. But Andrews tweaked his back Wednesday, sat out the next two days and couldn't play.
