Today is the greatest day I've ever known
Can't live for tomorrow, tomorrow's much too long
I burn my eyes out
Before I get out
I wanted more than life could ever grant
Bored by the chore of saving face
-- "Today," Smashing Pumpkins
With Halloween right around the corner, the Bottom 10 is cranking up some Smashing Pumpkins tunes on the iPod. To borrow the words of Smashing Pumpkins front man Billy Corgan, the Bottom 10 has to be "bored by the chore of saving face" this late in the season. As a long-suffering Cubs fan, Corgan can relate to the plight of teams in the Bottom 10.
Western Kentucky keeps its hold on No. 1, and that's no surprise given the Hilltoppers' 0-7 record.
With two straight losses, Florida International makes its return to the Bottom 10, while Ball State gets a reprieve after beating Eastern Michigan last week.
Meanwhile, the highly coveted No. 5 spot belongs to Mike Leach and Texas Tech. The Red Raiders' surprising loss to Texas A&M (last week's occupant), along with the coach's postgame comments, cemented their Bottom 10 status.
The Bottom 10 masquerade ball kicks off Saturday in Denton, Texas, where the Pillow Fight of the Week features 0-7 Western Kentucky at 1-6 North Texas (ESPN360.com, 4:15 p.m. ET). When it's over, at least one of them will be disguised as a winning team.
With apologies to Steve Harvey and Billy Corgan, here's this week's Bottom 10:
"The End is the Beginning is the End": Despite Ron Zook's 19-36 record as Illinois' coach, athletic director Ron Guenther said Zook will be back in 2010.
Waiting list: Hawaii (2-5), Louisville (2-5), Maryland (2-6), Memphis (2-6),
San Jose State (1-5), SEC officials, Tulane (2-5), UAB (2-5), Vandy (2-6), Washington State (1-6).
