SMU takes big step toward bowl eligibility

The Mustangs defeated Tulsa, 27-13 to move to 4-4 overall and 3-1 in Conference USA action. SMU is second in the West division. But more important than any of that, the Mustangs now need just two wins to become bowl eligible.

They've got a great shot to do it. SMU faces Rice, UTEP and Tulane at home and plays Marshall on the road. They must go 2-2 to make a bowl game. I think they'll do it. And if they do, the Hawaii Bowl seems a likely destination. The last time SMU went to a bowl game was 1984, before the death penalty. They beat Notre Dame in the Aloha Bowl (fitting, isn't it?) 27-20.
