Jason Giambi is close to signing a one-year deal with the Colorado Rockies, according to a baseball official with knowledge of the situation.
After being let go by the Oakland A's last season, Giambi hit .292, with two homers and 11 RBIs in 19 regular season games to help Colorado make the playoffs. Giambi, who turned 39 earlier this month, will likely be used mostly as a pinch-hitter with Todd Helton expected to be the team's regular first baseman.
After the Yankees decided not to offer Giambi a contract after the 2008 season, Giambi returned to Oakland, but he was not the powerful force he once was with the A's. In 83 games with Oakland last season, Giambi hit .193 with 11 homers and 40 RBIs in 83 games.Andrew Marchand is managing editor of 1050 ESPN New York.
