Imagine if, this season, Kansas or Kentucky or Syracuse was perfect through its conference tournament heading into the NCAA tournament. Imagine the hype if that same team had won 72 consecutive games. It would be the topic of conversation in the sports world.
Right now, there is such a team, but outside of its local fan base it has broken records mostly in obscurity. Powered by Tina Charles and Maya Moore, the UConn Huskies are ridiculously dominant.
They haven't lost a game since the national semifinals two years ago. They were perfect last season and they're perfect this season. Their average margin of victory in their winning streak is more than 30 points. Even more ludicrous, they haven't won by fewer than 10 points.
But Geno Auriemma's women have made it all look too easy. If they'd won a few games as time expired, we'd appreciate them more. If they'd struggled once or twice, we'd praise them for their grit, character and all the clichés.
Instead of poetic passion, they've given us prosaic perfection. All that winning has us at a loss, which is unfortunate. These Huskies never need buzzer-beaters; but they deserve, at the very least, some buzz.
