When North Carolina's Deon Thompson takes the floor Thursday night in the NIT title game against Dayton, he will appear in his 152nd career game, the most of any player in men's college basketball history.
For the Tar Heels, they are making their first NIT Finals appearance since they won their only title in 1971.
• A win would also give UNC something no other school has ever done -- win the NCAA and NIT titles in consecutive seasons. In 1971, North Carolina won the NIT and then advanced to the Final Four the following season.
• Should North Carolina win on Thursday, they would join Kentucky (7 NCAA, 2 NIT titles) as the only schools with multiple NIT and NCAA Tournament championships. UNC has won 5 NCAA championships and a NIT title.
• If North Carolina and Duke go on to win championships this season, they would be only the fifth set of teams from the same conference to win an NCAA and NIT title in the same season (CCNY won both in 1950).
