Joli's jots; Bells Day Eight

Day 8 of the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach and we were off to an alternative site. "The Search" had been on for better surf since Sunday. The co-contest directors and former tour surfers Damien 'Dooma' Hardman and Pancho Sullivan figured they had finally got it right with the call for Thirteenth Beach, a combo beach break/reef set up about 15 miles east of Bells Beach. Crews were joking that when Hardman and Pancho put in their expenses, the fuel bill could double the cost of running the contest. They've been everywhere over the past few days, up and down the coast, getting a serious migraine looking for a contest site.

Damien Hardman and Pancho Sullivan have been meeting their contractual obligations to "Search."

"A man's got to do what a man's got to do," was Damien Hardman's quote about the conditions as I passed him on the steps down the beach. The conditions were marginal at best but Round 2 was finally under way.

Somewhere behind the scenes, the media was trying to stir up some controversy about the decision not to run yesterday at Johanna Beach. Many of the local surfers considered the conditions perfect with the right winds and size.

Dane "I just turn up to surf when they tell me the contest is on" Reynolds.

Dane Reynolds put one reporter in his place when he said "I don't get involved in any of those things. I just turn up to surf when they tell me the contest is on."

Reynolds was happy as he'd just won his heat, and that was the end of that. Maybe that was the same way he was dealing with all the controversy that Freddie Pattachia had stirred up over the weekend with his comments on the webcast about the favoritism shown to Owen Wright by the beach commentators during their first round heat.

Bobby Martinez was pretty happy to get through considering the conditions that he called "tricky." He couldn't hear his scores and didn't know he'd taken out last year's runner up and hometown favorite, Adam Robinson, till he got back on the beach. "I'm happy to get a win in these conditions because I know Robbo is such a good surfer."

Bobby Martinez just put last year's giant killer, Adam Robertson in his place.

The surf got better through the day and I figure we'll be back at Bells tomorrow morning or at least within sight of it. The Round Three Heat to watch may be Jordy Smith vs Owen Wright. Winki Pop, which is right next door to Bells, could be the place of choice considering the surf forecast.
