Ford: Tennis dropped the ball

Tennis officials should have explored all avenues to punish Wayne Odesnik -- or at least keep him off the court -- during and immediately following his criminal case for transporting HGH. Instead, they did nothing, writes Bonnie D. Ford. Story

PARIS -- The International Tennis Federation says it will review rules that have prevented it from suspending Wayne Odesnik even after the American player pleaded guilty to importing growth hormones into Australia.

Under current rules, the governing body of tennis can only provisionally suspend players who are being investigated for a failed drug test. But players cannot be prevented from playing while they are investigated for other suspected doping violations, like possessing a banned substance.

ITF anti-doping manager Stuart Miller says there's clearly a need to review those rules and that there is "no doubt" that will happen.
