Piniella to bat Byrd at lead-off vs. lefties
By Bruce Levine
CHICAGO -- Cubs manager Lou Piniella said he would shake up the lineup after Chicago's 3-2, 10-inning loss to the Houston Astros on Sunday.
Piniella plans to drop shortstop Ryan Theriot to the eighth spot against left-handed pitching. The corresponding move is to bat Marlon Byrd at lead-off against lefties and move Jeff Baker to the second spot.
Piniella also stated Xavier Nady would bat fourth against left-handers, however Nady can't play every day due to his recovering right elbow. With Nady batting clean-up, that also would drop Aramis Ramirez to the No. 5 hole.
The Cubs will face a left-hander in three of the next four games against the New York Mets.
What forced Piniella's hand was that Theriot is now 1-for-11 against lefties, after going 0-for-4 against Wandy Rodriguez and Tim Byrdak on Sunday.
