'College GameDay' among winners
ESPN, Inc., which led the way with 54 nominations, won seven Sports Emmy Awards Monday night in New York City.
ESPN's three Sports Emmys were for Outstanding Studio Show -- Daily for "Pardon The Interruption;" Outstanding Studio Show -- Weekly for "College GameDay;" and Kirk Herbstreit for Outstanding Sports Personality -- Studio Analyst.
ESPN's newsmagazine, "E:60," won two awards. One was for Outstanding News Journalism for "Wanted: Fugitive." The second was a tie with CBS for the Outstanding Long Feature award: CBS won for its NCAA men's basketball championship feature, "The Magic of J-Mac," and E:60 won for "Catfish Hunters."
ESPN2's new weekday show, "SportsNation," tied MLB Network's "MLB Tonight" to win the Sports Emmy in Graphic Design.
ESPN.com, which has won seven Sports Emmys in five years of eligibility, took home the award for Outstanding Approaches Sports Programming for the "Super Bowl MVPs."
HBO led the way with nine awards Monday night. Former Fox, ABC and NBC football broadcaster John Madden was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
NBC won awards for Outstanding Live Sports Special for its presentation of Super Bowl XLIII and also was honored with the Outstanding Live Sports Series award for NBC's "Sunday Night Football."
Bob Costas was named Outstanding Sports Personality -- Studio Host for his work at HBO and MLB Network. CBS' Jim Nantz won the award for Outstanding Sports Personality -- Play-by-Play, and NBC's Cris Collinsworth was honored with the Outstanding Sports Personality -- Sports Event Analyst award.
Overall, ESPN has won 135 Sports Emmy Awards in 23 years of eligibility.
The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences hosted the 31st Annual Sports Emmy Awards at Frederick P. Rose Hall, Home of Jazz at Lincoln Center. Winners in 32 categories including outstanding live sports special, live series, sports documentary, studio show, promotional announcements, play-by-play personality and studio analyst.
