MONTREAL -- Hal Gill's status remains in doubt for Game 6 on Monday night after the Montreal Canadiens defenseman was inadvertently cut on the back of the leg by Pittsburgh Penguins forward Chris Kunitz's skate early in the third period of Saturday's Game 5.

Gill remained in Pittsburgh along with team doctor Dr. David Mulder after Montreal's 2-1 loss.

Gill told The Sun newspaper chain in Canada that he hoped he could play.

"It's only a cut," he told the newspaper. "We'll see."

The Penguins are planning as though Gill will be in the lineup.

"We expect him to play tomorrow," Pittsburgh coach Dan Bylsma said after the Penguins arrived in Montreal late Sunday afternoon.

"You never know, it's playoff time," Pittsburgh's Maxime Talbot said. "So you can't count him out. I played with him last year and he's a warrior."

At the Canadiens' practice facility, however, some players were more skeptical of Gill's injury, talking in terms of the magnitude of the loss if he can't play. Canadiens coach Jacques Martin, always tight-lipped about lineup changes, didn't sound optimistic about either Gill or Andrei Markov (lower-body injury) being in the lineup Monday.
