Chicago, San Jose mayors bet on series
By Jesse Rogers
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- From The Billy Goat Tavern to Eli's Cheescake, Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley put up numerous food items in a bet with San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed.
The Chicago Blackhawks play the San Jose Sharks in the Western Conference finals.
"The excitement over the Blackhawks has been great for the city of Chicago," Daley said at a City Hall news conference Friday, at which he was joined by Blackhawks chairman Rocky Wirtz and other team officials.
"Their success has brought new fans to the game of hockey, and has inspired Chicagoans who aren't at the United Center to head out to neighborhood bars and restaurants to watch the games to cheer them on," Daley said.
Daley is in the process of collecting on his bet with Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson on a variety of Canadian specialties, including wild smoked salmon. He hopes to win a similar package of native Northern Californian goods from Reed.
Anything edible Chicago wins in these wagers will be donated to the Chicago Food Depository.
