Furcal (hamstring) could return Sunday

LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Rafael Furcal looks like a strong bet to return to the starting lineup on Sunday against Detroit, although manager Joe Torre cautioned that it still will depend on how well Furcal bounces back from playing in an extended spring training game on Saturday in Glendale, Ariz.

Furcal took five at-bats in the loosely structured game.

"He was good," Torre said. "He even bunted once. The thing about going over there is they can kind of create things. The only thing we will wait for tomorrow is to see how his body feels. We could activate him tomorrow.''

Torre had hinted on Saturday that with an off-day Monday, the Dodgers might wait until Tuesday's game at Chicago to activate Furcal from the 15-day disabled list. Furcal hasn't played since injuring his left hamstring running out a doubleplay grounder in the first game of a doubleheader on April 27 at New York.

Furcal's activation likely will mean the end of Nick Green's time with the Dodgers. The veteran utility man's minor league contract was purchased by the Dodgers on May 4, the day they finally put Furcal on the DL, and he had appeared in just five games through Friday, batting .125. Presumably, he will be designated for assignment to clear a roster spot.
