Fast facts on Slovakia-Italy

Posted by ESPN Stats & Information

Slovakia 3, Italy 2

Slovakia stunned defending champion Italy with a two-goal performance by Robert Vittek and a goal by substitute Kamil Kopunek on his first touch of the ball in the 89th minute, sending Italy home after a disappointing tournament and the Fighting Jondas through to the Round of 16. Vittek's "brace" was the fifth multigoal performance in the tournament.

• Slovakia was efficient with its attempts on target, converting three of its four into goals. This was a running issue for the Azzurri, which saw Paraguay and New Zealand convert their only chances on goal for scores.

• Italian goalkeepers combined to make only one save in this World Cup, the fewest of any team to have played all three matches this year and the lowest in any World Cup since 1966, when the stat was first kept.

• Down two goals with 17 minutes remaining, the Italians had no choice but to open up the game. The Azzurri piled on the pressure, and it resulted in two goals, but Slovakia converted its only attempt after that point to seal the victory.
