CARLISLE, England -- American defender Frank Simek has left Sheffield Wednesday to sign a two-year contract with Carlisle of League One.

The 25-year-old played for Saint Louis University, signed with Arsenal and made one appearance for the Gunners, in the League Cup against Wolverhampton in December 2003. He also was loaned to Queens Park Rangers (2004) and Bournemouth (2005).

He joined Sheffield Wednesday for the 2005-06 season and became a regular starter. He was sidelined by an ankle injury from December 2007 to October 2008.

Carlisle announced the contract Thursday on its website.

Simek has made five appearances for the U.S. national team.
