James Leads Nets Past Magic
ORLANDO -- If Summer League is any indication, it's safe to say the Nets came away with a steal on draft day.
Damion James, the No. 24 pick in the 2010 NBA Draft, erupted for an AirTran Airways Orlando Pro Summer League season-high 30 points to lead the Nets to a 94-91 victory over the Magic at the RDV Sportsplex on Wednesday.
The former Texas forward went 9-for-18 from the field and 9-for-11 from the charity stripe. It marked the third straight solid performance for James, who is now averaging 20.7 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.
New Jersey acquired James by trading the rights to Jordan Crawford and the 31st selection in the NBA Draft to the Atlanta Hawks on June 24. Ironically Jordan's brother, Joe Crawford, was the bright spot for Orlando on this night.
Crawford exploded for 21 of his team-high 29 points in the first half and finished the night by drilling a scorching 10 of his 13 shots from the field.
"The biggest thing for me is to go out there and play as hard as I can," Crawford said. "I think they know I can score, so for me it's just about playing hard every minute offensively and defensively."
The former Kentucky Wildcat made the most of his first opportunity to start in Orlando's Summer League lineup after playing a total of just 18 minutes in the Magic's first two contests.
However, he made a critical error down the stretch. With the Magic trailing by two, Crawford stepped out of bounds with seven seconds left.
Terrence Williams then connected on a free throw at the other end to extend New Jersey's lead to three.
Patrick Ewing Jr. tried to answer with a half-court heave, but his errant shot did not get off before time expired.
"I wanted that win today so bad," Crawford explained. "But I have a feeling next game, it's going to be hard to stop us."
Williams posted 22 points and six assists for the Nets, while Paul Davis (16), Yaroslav Korolev (13) and Ewing Jr. (11) all scored in double figures for Orlando.
