Magic cap week with comeback win
ORLANDO -- The Orlando Magic ended the 2010 AirTran Airways Pro Summer League on a winning note with an 80-77 victory over the Charlotte Bobcats on Friday, July 9 at the RDV Sportsplex in Orlando, Fla. The Magic, who were down by as many as 16 points in the first half, stormed back to take their first win of summer league action behind Paul Davis' 24 points and eight rebounds.
After taking a 41-32 deficit into the locker room, the Magic emerged a different team in the third quarter, storming out on a 10-2 run and eventually taking their first lead of the game after a Joe Crawford 3-pointer at the 1:17 mark.
The two squads continued to seesaw in the final quarter, seeing eight lead changes and four ties in the last stanza alone. Orlando finally took the lead for good when, with the game tied with 3:25 remaining, Davis fueled a critical 8-0 run to give the Magic a 74-66 cushion. The Bobcats cut it as close as three, 77-74, in the final seconds of the game, but Orlando hit six of eight free throws in the final minute to secure the victory.
Charlotte's Sherron Collins provided the only offense for the Bobcats down the stretch, scoring the final 11 points for the Bobcats in the contest. Collins single-handedly kept them in the game late, hitting a 3-pointer with just over a minute remaining to cut the lead to five, 74-69, and converting an old-fashioned three-point play with 47.0 left on the clock to reduce the margin to four, 76-72.
After Joe Crawford made one of two from the line on the other end, Collins hit a jumper to make it a one possession game, 77-74. But Orlando's Curtis Stinson and Jeff Adrien iced the game with three shots from the charity stripe before Collins hit a long trey at the buzzer to provide the final score. The former Kansas star finished the game with a summer-league high 32 points, including hitting 7-of-11 from 3-point territory.
The Magic were also led to victory by Crawford's 15 points, Stinson's 14 points, seven assists and six rebounds and Stanley Robinson's double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds. The Bobcats, who ended the week with a 3-2 record, were also paced by Derrick Brown's 14 points and nine rebounds, while Jerel McNeal added 13 in the losing effort.
