Torre to wait before deciding future
ST. LOUIS -- Joe Torre wants to wait a few more months before deciding whether he wants to manage after this season.
Torre, who'll be 70 on Sunday, is in the final year of a three-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Before the season, talks were cut off.
Torre said Friday he wanted to make sure he retired when he was still healthy and active. Attending Wimbledon is one of the things Torre said he wanted to do.
"I'm not making any long-range plans," Torre said Friday. "Not that I'm concerned about anything, I just know there are other things I want to do while I still feel good enough to continue to be active.
"I'm just going to wait toward the end of the year."
By September, Torre expects to have a good idea what he'd like to do.
As for now, he said managing is still exciting for him, although he's not enamored of all the travel. The Dodgers were in third place in the NL West, four games back, after dropping the first three games of a four-game series against the Cardinals to start the second half of the season.
"It's still exciting, the game in the dugout is still exciting," Torre said. "If you do it right, this job consumes you."
