The Mets are close to signing reliever Chad Cordero to a minor league deal, a team source confirmed. The deal is not yet official.

Cordero became a free agent when the Seattle Mariners wanted to send him to Triple-A Tacoma, and he declined the option.

Cordero, 28, had a 6.52 ERA in 9 2/3 innings with the Mariners. He had a combined 113 saves from 2005 to 2007 with the Washington Nationals.

An All-Star closer for the Nationals in 2006, Cordero went on the disabled list twice during the 2008 season with a torn side muscle, torn labrum and torn biceps. He had season-ending shoulder surgery on July 8, 2008, and spent all of 2009 rehabilitating in the minors.
