Mike Cammalleri punished for slash

Associated Press

TORONTO -- Montreal Canadiens forward Mike Cammalleri has been suspended for the season opener for slashing the ankle of a New York Islanders prospect during an exhibition game.

The league said Monday that Cammalleri will miss Thursday's game at Toronto and forfeit more than $32,000 in salary. He was ejected from Saturday's game after committing the penalty on Nino Niederreiter in the second period.

Cammalleri had a league-high 13 goals in 19 playoff games last season.
