USC didn't release a timetable for Baxter's return. He rushed for 22 yards on four carries before being injured early in the fourth quarter while running out of bounds. Coach Lane Kiffin said Baxter would have been the quarterback on the third-and-2 play in which Marc Tyler overthrew wide-open fullback Stanley Havili for what would have been an easy touchdown.
Baxter played quarterback in high school and often runs plays from the Wildcat formation in USC practices.
The Trojans wound up scoring seven plays after Tyler's overthrow, but gave Stanford the ball back with 1:02 left and Andrew Luck engineered the last-second field-goal drive that beat USC.
