Going goofy in Peniche


The goofy-footers ruled the day at Supertubes, among the notables was an in-form CJ Hobgood.

Matty Wilkinson walked down the beach path to the Supertubos site carrying the typical Euro breakfast of pastry and coffee.

"I half wish I hadn't won yesterday, I want to surf this stuff," he joked.

The Hawaiians hanging their heads a little low after today's outing.

He was watching barreling lefthanders pour through the main contest bank of the Rip Curl Pro Portugal. In English it's called Supertubes and in Portuguese it's Supertubos, either way, it was living up to its name this morning. Matty did back down on his wish before continuing down the beach to watch the day's action by adding, "No, I'm glad I've won."

The first three heats belonged to goofy-footers. Damien "Dooma" Hobgood slotted into the lefts for a win while Bobby Martinez dominated his heat, catching the set wave of the day.

"It was fun, whoever was in the right spot was going to get a good wave," said Martinez after. "It's a beachbreak, and the waves were good when they came to me."
