Acaffella out of BC injury
By Steve Andersen Daily Racing Form
INGLEWOOD, Calif. -- The stakes winners Acaffella and Bench Points are sidelined with injuries and will be out of training until early 2011, their trainers said.
Acaffella, who won the Angel Island Stakes at Golden Gate Fields on Sept. 11, underwent surgery on Monday after being diagnosed with a hairline fracture of a cannon bone following a fifth-place finish in the Grade 1 Norfolk Stakes on Oct. 2.
Trainer Richard Mandella said that during the surgery Acaffella had a stabilizing screw placed in the cannon bone. Acaffella was being considered for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf at Churchill Downs on Nov. 6.
"He has a hairline fracture, just a slight sliver," Mandella said. "He should be fine. We'll give him three months off."
Owned by Spendthrift Farm, Acaffella has one victory in three starts and earnings of $45,750.
Bench Points was the dominant 2-year-old statebred male at Del Mar, but he diagnosed with a bone chip in a knee after his win in the I'm Smokin Stakes on Sept. 6, trainer Tim Yakteen said.
"It was discovered about five days after the race," Yakteen said.
Bench Points is unbeaten in three starts. He won his stakes debut in the Graduation Stakes at 5 1/2 furlongs on Aug. 4 and followed with a win in the six-furlong I'm Smokin Stakes. He was considered a candidate for the California Cup Juvenile on Oct. 30.
Yakteen described the prognosis as "excellent. He'll come back in the first week of December."
