Panel to probe Fran Crippen's death

Associated Press

LAUSANNE, Switzerland -- Swimming's international governing body is turning to a panel of experts to investigate the death of an American swimmer during an open-water race in United Arab Emirates.

The task force will feature those versed in lifesaving, cardiology, sports medicine and law, plus two others appointed by U.S. swim authorities. USA Swimming is conducting its own investigation independent of the one by FINA.

Gunnar Werner will handle the legal aspects of the FINA investigation. He is the acting president of the Court of Arbitration for Sport and an honorary FINA member.

Werner is in Fujairah, where Fran Crippen died during a 10-kilometer World Cup race Saturday. Crippen failed to finish and was found in the water two hours later.
