With the U.S. and world economies sputtering, extending any sponsorships for PGA Tour events must be considered gravy for the suits in Ponte Vedra Beach.
The Puerto Rico Open presented by seepuertorico.com falls into that category, as the tourism company for the Caribbean island stepped up to sponsor the PGA Tour event through 2012.
Last year, the tournament was an opposite-field event, while many of the tour's big names were collecting paychecks at the no-cut WGC-CA Championship at Doral.
The event's previous sponsor, Banco Poplar, will still continue as a "significant partner of the tournament," the tour said in a press release.
In its three years, Greg Kraft won the event in 2008; Michael Bradley in 2009; and rookie Derek Lamely won this year in his 12th PGA Tour start.
