Whistler-based Dendrite Studios premiered their first feature film "Out of the Shadows" this fall on a tour throughout Canada, the U.S. and Europe. Today, Dendrite's online store opens for business to download the movie, which comes in an HD or iPod/handheld version. Dendrite's offering a pay-as-much-as-you-can plan for their downloaded movie with a minimum payment of $1.99. The DVD of the film is for sale for $27.95.
"Paying $30 for a film is not feasible for many people, especially ski bums who are living in their van on an oatmeal and rice diet," says Dendrite's Nicolas Teichrob. "We have a minimum of $1.99 set, which is affordable for all, at the price of a beer or coffee. With this variable rate, we allow people to pay what they think the film is worth."
Judges at this year's IF3 film festival awarded Dendrite best big-mountain film. "The other nominees for that award were Matchstick and Poor Boyz, who have been in the business for many years and with big budgets," says Teichrob. "I think we proved to a lot of people that when you are passionate about what you are doing, a lot can be done out of your own pocket."
