Let's salute UConn women's hoops
By Dick Vitale
A major tip of the cap to the UConn women's basketball team! We should salute coach Geno Auriemma and their amazing record. Wow, 88 in a row tying the UCLA Bruins men's mark is awesome, baby with a capital A!
My friends, both the UCLA mark and the Connecticut streak are amazing accomplishments. I have read some people criticizing Auriemma's team because of comparisions of the streaks, but both should be praised.
I believe that if the Wizard of Westwood, John Wooden, was still alive, he would be the first to call Auriemma and congratulate him. Why shouldn't we laud this remarkable streak? Auriemma is a Hall of Famer for good reason.
During this 88-game streak, only two teams have come within single figures of Auriemma's team -- Stanford in the final last season and Baylor in a Maalox masher this season. Think about it: 86 of the 88 wins were by double figures!
Also understand that Connecticut faces the creme de la creme of women's college basketball. The lady Huskies take everybody's best shot -- there is always a target on their backs. Yet 29 ranked opponents have suffered losses to Auriemma's team. Fifty-two of their wins came by 30 or more points.
That is dominance, plain and simple.
Auriemma has had many special players during the streak, and Maya Moore has been amazing. It is great to see her smile on the court. The hard work and effort of the entire team has paid off.
The Connecticut program should be well respected. There is an intensity there and Geno's players have earned every positive remark during this amazing streak.
It is one of the greatest sports accomplishments in my lifetime.
A salute to Auriemma and company as they go for win number 89 against another ranked team, Florida State on Tuesday.
