Hounshell (Mentor, Ohio) had previously given an oral pledge to Florida and coach Will Muschamp, who, along with Gators offensive line coach Frank Verducci, a former Notre Dame assistant, visited the 6-5, 245-pounder on Sunday. Irish staff went to see Hounshell on Monday and convinced the ESPN three-star athlete, who is expected to play defensive end for Notre Dame, to head north.
Kelly had already scored major commitments from coveted defensive ends Ishaq Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y) and Aaron Lynch (Cape Coral, Fla.) late last week.
"I called Coach Muschamp right away and it was one of the most difficult things I have ever had to do," the Lake Catholic star told The News-Herald in Ohio. "It kind of sounded like it broke his heart a little bit, and in a way, it broke mine, too. But I had to do what I felt was best for me.
"When Coach Kelly and my recruiting coach came up for a visit, that pretty much did it for me. It was just a great comfort level that I felt. The tradition at Notre Dame had a lot to do with my decision as well. We are an Irish family and grew up Notre Dame fans."
