Loyola's trip to Wright St. hits detour

The plan for the Loyola men's basketball team was to leave Chicago at 1:45 p.m. CT on Tuesday, allowing it to beat the incoming snowstorm and hopefully arrive in Dayton, Ohio by early evening to prepare for Thursday's game against Wright State.

But what was supposed to be a five-hour trip turned into an unforgettable 10-hour journey thanks to the blizzard and Interstate 70 being closed near the Indiana-Ohio border.

"I'm sure it'll be a nice story to tell freshmen next year to scare them about road trips," Loyola senior guard Ryan Sterling said on Wednesday. "I have no plans on continuing to travel by bus [after my career.]"

To pass the time, the Ramblers watched five movies -- "The Great Outdoors", "Inception", "The Godfather: Part II", "From Paris with Love" and "300".

Plus, they kept an eye on junior center John Benkoske whenever the trip encountered a new obstacle.

"Each time something happened, he got more and more upset," Sterling said. "He was getting really antsy. It was actually pretty funny to watch. It was really entertaining for us on the bus."

The team cheered when the bus finally pulled off the highway for Dayton, but their arrival to the hotel was a more muted celebration.

"Nobody said a word," Sterling said. "Everyone got their keys and went to their rooms and went to bed. Everybody was pretty tired."
