Holiday hoops and hockey

Men's college basketball: It's a light night in Top 25 men's action, but the two games are good ones on ESPN's Big Monday. At 7 p.m. ET, it's a Big East showdown as No. 20 Syracuse visits No. 14 Villanova (who just narrowly avoided an embarrassing loss to DePaul over the weekend). The Wildcats have won four of the last six games played in Philadelphia in this series. At 9 p.m., No. 2 Kansas hosts Oklahoma State. Kansas will be without junior guard Tyshawn Taylor, who has been suspended indefinitely from the team for violating team rules. The Jayhawks have won 36 straight home games against unranked opponents, with their last loss coming in 2006. Oklahoma State has not won at Lawrence since 1989.

Women's college basketball: Five of the Top 25 teams play tonight, and ESPN2 has a February Frenzy doubleheader. At 7 p.m., Georgia (fresh off an upset of No. 19 Kentucky) visits No. 4 Tennessee. The Lady Vols can clinch the SEC regular-season title with a win tonight. At 9 p.m., No. 23 Iowa State hosts Texas. No. 13 North Carolina, No. 16 Miami and No. 23 Marist are also in action tonight.

NHL: The Washington Capitals (31-19-10) and Pittsburgh Penguins (36-19-5) play for the first time in Pittsburgh since the New Year's Day Winter Classic (7:30 p.m., Versus). The marquee matchup of Eastern Conference rivals loses a bit of its luster without the Penguins' Sidney Crosby (concussion) and Evgeny Malkin (out for the year). The Caps have won six straight against the Pens, and Washington is a remarkable 9-0-2 against Pittsburgh in the last 11 regular-season meetings.
