Open-water race in Mexico canceled

Associated Press

LAUSANNE, Switzerland -- An open-water Grand Prix event in Mexico has been canceled because the water quality was judged unsafe.

Swimming's governing body FINA says its sports medicine committee recommended calling off the May 7 event at Sumidero Canyon.

FINA says documents from Mexico's swimming federation showed "that FINA should not expose its swimmers to these unsafe water conditions."

FINA is re-evaluating safety at open-water races after receiving critical reports from independent panels examining the death of American swimmer Fran Crippen in hot conditions in the United Arab Emirates last October.

The Mexican event, with 9.3-mile races for men and women, was the fifth scheduled stop on an 11-race calendar.
