IOC worried about flooding in Rio
RIO DE JANEIRO -- The International Olympic Committee is concerned about the potential for flooding near Maracana, which will host the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2016 Olympics.
Rio state transportation secretary Julio Lopes said Thursday that an IOC member expressed concern after recent heavy rains flooded the area around the stadium.
Lopes reportedly told visiting IOC members that Rio governor Sergio Cabral made guarantees that flooding won't be an issue in 2016, and was quoted by O Globo newspaper as saying local authorities reassured IOC officials "the problem will be solved."
The IOC's two-day visit started Wednesday, when members met Henrique Meirelles, who will head the Olympic Public Authority.
