Trio work in the rain
By Mike Welsch Daily Racing Form
LOUISVILLE, Ky -- Heavy showers greeted the horses when the racetrack opened for training but did not keep three likely Kentucky Derby starters from working before dawn Monday morning at Churchill Downs.
With the racetrack sealed and sloppy, Santiva worked a half-mile in 49.99 seconds, Watch Me Go five furlongs in 1:02.00, and Nehro four furlongs in 50.72.
Santiva was the first to come out immediately after the track opened at 5:45 and looked sharp with jockey Shaun Bridgmohan aboard, posting splits of 13.58, 25.96, and 37.82 for his opening three furlongs before galloping out five-eighths very willingly in 1:02.71.
Watch Me Go broke off at the half-mile pole under jockey Freddie Lenclud, getting his opening three-eighths in 36.78 and working around to the seven-eighths pole on the clubhouse turn. He then continued to gallop out very strongly around the turn and up the backstretch, going six furlongs in 1:15.01 and seven-eighths in 1:29.28 before finally pulling up a mile in 1:45.14.
Nehro, with regular exercise rider Carlos Rosas in the saddle, switched back to his left lead nearing the wire and did not gallop out well, pulling up five-eighths in 1:05.48.
Likely Derby favorite Dialed In visited the track at 7 a.m., galloping for the first time since his arrival on Saturday. Dialed In went a slow 1 1/2 miles, with the rain intensifying as he completed the second half of his morning routine.
