In just the second year of the new, younger FIBA classifications that added under-17 World Championships as well as the alternating U16 qualifiers across the globe, USA Basketball has made some changes in the national team trials for the youngest grouping.

Two years ago, USAB invited just 34 players to the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., for the first-ever U16 national team trials. With the country's national basketball program getting its second shot at a U16 team, the biggest change is the number of invitees. The total has nearly quadrupled from two years ago, with 121 players confirmed.

A month ago, USA Basketball announced the 35 players invited to the trials, which takes place May 26-30.

The jump from 35 to 121 players was due to a new player-initiated application process. Players born on or after January 1, 1995, could apply for inclusion if they were willing and able to pay for travel accommodations. The selection committee reviewed the applications, which ultimately led to 86 additions to the field of hopefuls. (See the tables below for the full list of invitees.)

The 12 players selected for the national team will compete at the 2011 FIBA Americas U16 Championship for Women in Merida, Mexico, June 13-18. Team USA took home gold in Mexico City, which hosted the 2009 tournament. The championships serve as a qualifier for next summer's FIBA U17 World Championships, which will be held August 17-26, 2012, in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

The bulk of the invited players are from the 2013 and 2014 recruiting classes. The exceptions are Shilpa Tummala, a 5-foot-11 guard from Phoenix, Ariz., who is ahead of her peers academically and is set to graduate in 2012. Two players from the 2015 class also have been added to the invitee list -- Taylor Murray, a 5-7 guard from Odenton, Md., and Jasmin Taylor, a 5-7 guard from Watauga, Texas.

The larger number of participants forced USA Basketball to change the schedule framework it utilized for the U16 and U17 team trials the past two years. With three adjacent courts in the facility, the invitees have been split into two separate groups for skill sessions and trial sessions.

The on-court action begins Thursday evening with each group taking the floor for 90-minute skill sessions. Friday provides the first full day, with two skill sessions and one trial session for each group, again 90 minutes for each session. Saturday will be all trial sessions, three installments for each group, with Sunday being the final day of competition. The three Sunday sessions will not be broken into separate groups.

The team selections will be named on the morning of Monday, May 30, with the first team practice scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on that same morning. The players selected will return home for a few days and return to Colorado Springs for training camp June 3-13.
