Golf Boys score a hole-in-one

By Amanda Rykoff

The New Kids on the Block and the Backstreet Boys are in the midst of a red-hot summer tour. But they've got some stiff competition as of Tuesday night. PGA players Ben Crane, Bubba Watson, Rickie Fowler and Hunter Mahan have taken the music world by storm with their new boy band, Golf Boys.

The band's new single, "Oh Oh Oh," premiered Tuesday night on the Golf Channel and, thanks to a dedicated Twitter campaign, the video already has been viewed more than 69,000 times on YouTube. The single also is available for download on iTunes. There's even a charitable component to the effort: Sponsor Farmers Insurance will donate $1,000 to charitable initiatives chosen by Crane and the insurance company for every 100,000 views of the video.

The high-energy song features lyrics such as "you want to play with the pros now, you gotta hit it in the hole now" and perfectly captures the choreography, lip-synching and tween sex appeal that characterized NKOTB, Backstreet Boys, 'N Sync and even Menudo, the grandfather of all boy bands. More important, it brings a winking eye and gives viewers a glimpse into the personality and sense of humor of guys who are typically all business on the golf course.

Crane, who is the "face" of Golf Boys and spearheaded the effort, is a nine-year veteran of the PGA Tour and is better known for his slow play, Christian faith and serious demeanor. In an effort to change that reputation, he surprised friends and players alike when he launched a video last year making fun of his workout routine. The infamous red, one-piece wetsuit and black biker's helmet that debuted there returned (along with pink socks and white sneakers) in the "Oh Oh Oh" video to hilarious effect.

The wardrobe choices of the other golfers are similarly inspired and hilarious. Rickie Fowler, who at 22 years old wasn't even born when NKOTB was formed, sports a black leather pants and jacket ensemble. Hunter Mahan is decked out in skin-tight, leopard-print pants and a faux fur jacket. Bubba Watson steals the show in his denim overalls, showing off his chest hair and farmer's tan.

When it comes to vocal talent, these guys probably shouldn't quit their day jobs. But when it comes to having fun, demonstrating their sense of humor and adding personality to a game that desperately needs it, "Oh Oh Oh" is a hole-in-one.
