Boston College assistant coach Joe Jones was named the next coach at Boston University on Thursday.

"After an extensive search, we are thrilled to have Joe Jones take over the reins of a BU basketball program that is on the rise," athletic director Mike Lynch said in a statement. "Joe comes with impressive credentials and past head coaching experience that will help take the program to the next level. I am happy to welcome Joe, his wife and their kids to the Terrier family."

Jones replaces Pat Chambers, who signed a five-year deal with Penn State in early June after leading BU to the America East title and an NCAA tournament berth last season.

"We are going to play an exciting, up-tempo brand of basketball," Jones said in a statement. "I am looking forward to meeting the entire BU family and building on the rich BU basketball tradition."

Jones joined BC after seven seasons as coach at Columbia University. Jones had an 86-108 overall record at Columbia and a 39-59 record in the Ivy League.

Boston College finished 21-13 overall and 9-7 in the ACC last season.

"This is an exciting time for BU basketball," school president Dr. Robert A. Brown said in a statement. "After the success of last year's team on and off the court, I am excited that someone with Joe Jones' coaching experience and academic standards will be leading the program for years to come."

ESPN.com senior basketball writer Andy Katz first reported the hiring.
