J.C. Romero, who recently signed a minor league deal with the Washington Nationals under the impression that he would be promoted to the majors by July 15, intends to opt out of his contract and sign with the New York Yankees unless promoted, according to sources.

Romero was hoping to secure his release from Washington and move to the Yankees, on a minor league contract.

The 35-year-old left-hander, who has pitched in 652 games in the majors, pitched in 24 games for the Phillies earlier this season. The Yankees have been seeking left-handed relief help, in the aftermath of the season-ending injury to Pedro Feliciano.
