Osi Umenyiora a no-show
By Ohm Youngmisuk
New York Giants players reported for camp Friday morning, but Osi Umenyiora was not among them.
The Giants' defensive end did not appear at training camp Friday. He did not show up for his 9 a.m. ET physical, nor the team meeting that was held at 1 p.m. ET.
Umenyiora was placed on the reserve/did not report list by the Giants on Friday.
"I'm not taking any questions about Osi," general manager Jerry Reese said at his press conference. "Osi's not here. He knows training camp opens today. He's not here. I just really want to talk about the guys that are here. That's really what's most important. I can't control guys that are not here."
Reese said he had not spoken to the defensive end as of Friday afternoon.
"What I would like to see happen is obviously Osi come in, sit down and talk to Jerry and then decide he wants to be a Giant and make a difference on our team," coach Tom Coughlin said. "Osi is an excellent player, he's part of our team, he's under contract, he gives us an outstanding chance to win. The more outstanding players we can have the better."
Defensive end Justin Tuck says that a potential holdout by Omenyiora isn't a distraction to the team as of now, but it could become one if it continues to drag on.
"Not yet. We haven't practiced yet," Tuck said. "Obviously when we're out there (Saturday) and he's not there you'll feel the effects of it because he's our starting right defensive end. You lose a guy of that caliber and you're definitely going to feel the effects of it. But you know, hopefully he's here (Saturday). We'll wait and see."
A source confirmed that Umenyiora is not expected to participate in the team's first practice of camp on Saturday, as first reported by Newark Star-Ledger. However, the source did add that the holdout might not be a prolonged one.
The team did sign seven of its eight draft picks with first-round pick Prince Amukamara remaining the only unsigned rookie. Reese said he does not expect the cornerback out of Nebraska to be unsigned for long. The Giants also placed wide receiver Ramses Barden (ankle) on the physically unable to perform list to start camp while releasing defensive tackle Rocky Bernard after being unable to come to an agreement to modify his contract.
The Giants also announced that seven players will not be able to practice on the field until Aug. 4 due to the new transition rules relating to the CBA. Running back Brandon Jacobs (who restructured his contract), signed free agents center David Baas and punter Steve Weatherford, re-signed free agents defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka and offensive lineman Kevin Boothe and exclusive rights free agents fullback/tight end Bear Pascoe and offensive lineman Jamon Meredith cannot get on the field and practice until then.
