After Sunday's 13 NFL games, which were very unlucky for a lot of teams and players, you can't help but wonder whether the Minnesota Vikings kept Brett Favre's cell number on speed dial.
"Hey, Brett, it's us. Whatcha doing? Can we send the plane?"
If you missed Donovan McNabb's efforts as the Vikings' latest starting quarterback, you didn't miss much. He completed 7 of 15 passes for a massive 39 yards with a lone TD, a lone pick and a couple of sacks. And what really has to crush the Vikings' spirit is that they almost won in San Diego anyway. Almost.
But Donovan was hardly the only quarterback to have an awful day.
• Kansas City's Matt Cassel did complete 22 passes but for a puny 119 yards in a home-opening loss to Buffalo. Yes, Buffalo.
• Pittsburgh's Ben Roethlisberger did throw for 280 yards in Baltimore but fumbled twice, was intercepted three times and sacked four times in a resounding defeat.
• Then there was Carolina's Cam Newton who tied a first-game record by throwing for 422 yards but still lost anyway in Arizona. That's just wrong.
All this failure inspired our reader-generated list for this week: "Top 10 Clues You Need a New QB." And we're just talking about the NFL because there's more than enough first-week ineptitude among the pros to provide all the fodder you need.
You know the drill. Send your suggestions -- one or more -- to firstname.lastname@example.org. Include your first name, initial of your last name and your location. You have until noon Wednesday with a chance to be included in the list that will appear here Thursday.
Who knows. Perhaps Colt McCoy will write in with an explanation of how Cleveland lost at home to the Bengals who were using their backup quarterback. That's hard to do.
