J.D. Drew activated by Red Sox

Barely clinging to the American League wild-card lead, the Red Sox activated right fielder J.D. Drew from the disabled list and had him in the lineup for the nightcap of Sunday night's doubleheader against the New York Yankees.

Drew went on the disabled list July 20 with an impingement in his left shoulder. While nearing a return from that injury, Drew had to contend with finger and neck injuries.

Drew batted seventh in the Red Sox order and drove in Boston's first run with a fourth-inning single. He also walked and struck out as the Red Sox prevailed 7-4 in 14 innings. Drew came into the game batting .219 (51-for-233) with six doubles, one triple, four home runs, 21 RBIs, 23 runs and 33 walks in 77 games.

The Red Sox, who are 6-18 in the month of September after Sunday night's win in Game 2, have a one-game lead in the wild-card race over the Tampa Bay Rays.

To make room for Drew on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox recalled outfielder Ryan Kalish and placed him on the 60-day disabled list.
