Roundball chatter

Each week I'll write about the sport I love, college basketball:

• I was thrilled with the news of Mateen Cleaves being inducted into the Michigan State Hall of Fame. I loved watching him play, his infectious smile and leadership skills. Cleaves led the Spartans to the NCAA championship in 2000 with a win in the title game over Florida. Congrats to a true star, baby!

• New George Mason coach Paul Hewitt could not have been happy with the actions of starting guard Andre Cornelius. He has suspended Cornelius after he was arrested on charges of credit card fraud and credit card larceny. Cornelius led the Patriots in three-pointers made last season (61) and started all of the team's games a year ago. I have always said that poor decision making leads to big-time trouble.

• UCLA senior guard Jerime Anderson has been suspended for the first regular-season game against Loyola Marymount on November 11. Anderson pled guilty to two misdemeanor charges, appropriation of lost property and trespassing. He must complete 300 hours of community service in a two-year period.

• Good news for Georgia coach Mark Fox. Standout recruit Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, a 6-6 wing player, was cleared to compete in the upcoming 2011-12 season. Caldwell-Pope was investigated for receiving improper benefits from a person involved with AAU basketball and a local parks and recreation department in Columbus, Georgia. He was cleared and will be a solid addition for the Bulldogs.

• I recently spoke to ex-Rutgers coach Dick Lloyd. I will see Dick and many friends on Friday as we raise money for the V Foundation at The Blackstone in Patterson, New Jersey. Notre Dame coach Mike Brey is among the dignitaries who will be there. For information on tickets please call Tom Longo at 201-410-0321.
