LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith refused to publicly reveal whether or not the team intends to sign free agent Pisa Tinoisamoa, but the club is not expected to extend a contract offer to the veteran linebacker, according to a league source.

Tinoisamoa worked out for the Bears at Halas Hall on Wednesday, as he attempts to come back from a significant offseason procedure on his problematic knee.

"On our day off, most weeks that's the time we look at players and see what's available for us," Smith said. "We're a little short at the linebacker position. We really only have five true linebackers, so you want to know what the landscape is out there. Pisa looked pretty good. That's about all I can say. He looked good. Same old Pisa."

When healthy, the versatile Tinoisamoa played at an extremely high level for the both the Bears and St. Louis Rams. He recorded 100-plus tackles in four of his six seasons in St. Louis, and started 10 regular-season games for the Bears in 2010.
