Nick Mangold returns for Jets
By Rich Cimini
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- For two weeks, the New York Jets talked up rookie center Colin Baxter, praising him for stepping into Nick Mangold's shoes. Well, Mangold (out two weeks with a high-ankle sprain) was back in the lineup, starting Sunday against the Patriots in the Jets' 30-12 loss.
Baxter? He's inactive -- a surprising move.
The Jets planned to use guard Matt Slauson at center if Mangold re-injures his ankle. They also activated rookie guard Caleb Schlauderaff for the first time. As expected, outside linebacker Eddie Jones, signed Saturday off the practice squad, was active for the game.
Because of Tom Brady and the Patriots' record-setting passing attack, the Jets dressed 10 defensive backs for the game.
The Jets' inactives were: Quarterback Kevin O'Connell, wide receiver Logan Payne, running back Bilal Powell, tight end Josh Baker, linebacker Garrett McIntyre and defensive tackle Kenrick Ellis.
For the Patriots, defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth and tight end Aaron Hernandez were back from injuries and active for the game. As expected, linebacker Jerod Mayo (knee) was out. Their other inactives included: Wide receiver Julian Edelman, quarterback Ryan Mallett, saftey Josh Barrett, running back Danny Woodhead, tackle Sebastian Vollmer and defensive tackle Mike Wright.
