ARCADIA, Calif. -- Smiling Tiger and Unzip Me, California-based sprinters who finished third in Breeders' Cup races at Churchill Downs in 2010, will not be making return engagements for Breeders' Cup races in Kentucky on Nov. 5, their respective trainers said.
They were not pre-entered on Monday, when such entries were due. The Breeders' Cup was scheduled to announce the pre-entered runners on Wednesday.
Smiling Tiger, a multiple stakes winner who was third in the 2010 BC Sprint, is being given a month off, trainer Jeff Bonde said. Last week, Bonde said that Smiling Tiger was "jarred up" from his 2011 campaign.
"He's not going," Bonde said on Tuesday. "He's going to get a month to sit [around] and then get back to work. We'll give him a break."
A winner of 8 of 18 starts and $1,214,353, Smiling Tiger is owned by Alan Klein and Philip Lebherz. Smiling Tiger, 4, has won seven sprint stakes, and was fourth in the Grade 1 Pat O'Brien Stakes at Del Mar in late August.
Unzip Me, third in the 2010 BC Turf Sprint, will be entered for the $100,000 California Cup Distaff for statebred fillies and mares on the hillside turf course at Santa Anita on Saturday, trainer Marty Jones said.
"This would be a lot easier for the filly," Jones said.
Unzip Me was fourth in the Grade 3 Sen. Ken Maddy Handicap as the 4-5 favorite on Sept. 30. She has been favored in her six starts this year, which includes three stakes wins.
Last year in the BC Turf Sprint, Unzip Me, 5, was beaten 2 3/4 lengths by Chamberlain Bridge. "We've been down that road with her before," Jones said of the Breeders' Cup. "She got black-type back there already."
Unzip Me figures to be a strong favorite in the California Cup Distaff, one of five stakes for statebreds on Saturday's program at Santa Anita.
Jones will be represented on Breeders' Cup weekend with Tres Borrachos, who earned a fees-paid berth to the BC Dirt Mile with his victory in the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap at Del Mar in late July.
Tres Borrachos was pre-entered for the BC Dirt Mile on Nov. 5 by Monday's pre-entry deadline, according to Jones, and nominated for the $100,000 Ack Ack Handicap over 1 1/16 miles at Churchill Downs on Nov. 4.
Tres Borrachos finished fifth in the Goodwood Stakes on Oct. 1, fighting for the lead with eventual winner Game On Dude before fading to finish 5 3/4 lengths behind the winner.
"He's training really good," Jones said. "He had a tough race, but he's bounced back really well."
