Sean Astin said the sport of horse racing is ripe to be mocked.
So he joined "Saturday Night Live" alum Cheri Oteri in the mockumentary comedy "And They're Off ..." about a thoroughbred trainer desperate to get back into the winners circle and his unpredictable ex-girlfriend, who is desperate to return to his circle. The film opens this week.
"The real sport is so majestic and you get to see all the pageantry. Horses are like high performance-race cars," said Astin, famous for his roles in "Rudy" and the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. "So it was perfect to make fun of."
Dusty Sanders (Astin) has one last chance of success with a horse named Caveat, ridden by his psycho former girlfriend, Dee, played by Oteri. Martin Mull and Kevin Nealon are also in the cast of the movie, which was written by Alan Grossbard and directed by Rob Schiller.
"They pulled in a fun cast of people. The movie had some improv-ing at times. I enjoyed riffing on it," Astin said. "It's silly. I'm a little absurd. My guy is a well-meaning fop."
