EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The struggling New England Patriots secondary was without its best player Sunday night, as safety Patrick Chung, who is battling a right foot injury, was among the list of the team's inactive players for the Patriots' 37-16 win against the New York Jets.
Hours before the game, Chung was put through a series of drills on the turf at MetLife Stadium while being monitored by the Patriots' medical and training staff, who were trying to determine whether he could play. Chung missed the Wednesday and Thursday practices and was limited in Friday's practice.
James Ihedigbo, Sergio Brown, Ross Ventrone and Sterling Moore, all of whom entered the NFL as rookie free agents, are next on the safety depth chart.
Also among the inactives Sunday night were linebackers Brandon Spikes (knee) and Dane Fletcher (thumb), who were both listed as questionable with injuries.
Rookie offensive tackle Nate Solder, who was added to the injury report Saturday with a concussion, passed his pregame test and played. Top center/guard backup Ryan Wendell, who missed practices Wednesday and Thursday with a concussion, also was ready to go. So the Patriots had their top seven linemen in action.
Second-year defensive end Jermaine Cunningham, who has been a healthy scratch the last two games, was dressed for action Sunday night. Cunningham has played sparingly on defense, with most of his time coming on the punt return unit. Cunningham has been bumped down the depth chart with veteran Andre Carter taking most of the reps on the right side.
After missing last Sunday's loss to the Giants with a rib injury, former Jets defensive end Shaun Ellis was active and returned to the Meadowlands to face his former team. Ellis and Brandon Deaderick figured to split snaps on the left side.
Rookie Shane Vereen was the odd man out at running back, with veteran Kevin Faulk back in action after missing last week. This gave the Patriots a top running back group of BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Faulk, Danny Woodhead and Stevan Ridley.
Wide receiver Taylor Price, offensive lineman Donald Thomas and third-string quarterback Ryan Mallett were also inactive.
Jets safety Brodney Pool (knee) and tight end Shawn Nelson (illness) were inactive for New York, as were defensive linemen Kenrick Ellis and Martin Tevaseu, running back Bilal Powell, wide receiver Eron Riley and quarterback Kevin O'Connell.Mike Reiss covers the Patriots for ESPNBoston.com.
