ESPN.com news services
Vanderbilt plunged 13 spots and UCLA dropped out of the ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll in the first regular-season Top 25 rankings released Monday.
But a pair of matchups featuring a quartet of national contenders awaits Tuesday, a night that also will see unranked Michigan State attempt to delay Mike Krzyzewski in his quest to surpass Bobby Knight atop the all-time wins list.
ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Preseason Poll
The top five teams in the ESPN/USA Today coaches' preseason poll:
Duke remained No. 6 in a poll that was mostly static, with North Carolina, Kentucky, Ohio State, Connecticut and Syracuse unshaken in the top-five positions.
The No. 2 Wildcats will face 11th-ranked Kansas in the State Farm Champions Classic at New York on Tuesday (ESPN, 9 p.m. ET), a game that follows Duke-Michigan State at Madison Square Garden scheduled for 7 p.m.
Also Tuesday, the No. 3 Buckeyes will host eighth-ranked Florida (ESPN2, 8 p.m. ET).
The Tar Heels are off until Sunday, when they host Mississippi Valley State. North Carolina received all but one of the 30 No. 1 votes in the poll. Kentucky also drew a vote for the top ranking.
The Commodores fell from seventh to 20th after a loss to visiting Cleveland State in their second game of the season.
The Bruins, playing their first game of the season -- a debut in their temporary home at the Los Angeles Sports Arena -- were stunned by Loyola Marymount and were unranked after debuting in the preseason poll at No. 20.
