Vikings' Adrian Peterson out vs. Lions
ESPN.com news services
ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- The Minnesota Vikings were without running back Adrian Peterson for a third straight game.
Peterson was on the inactive list Sunday at Detroit with a sprained left ankle and Toby Gerhart took his place on the depth chart and ran for 90 yards and had a receiving touchdown.
Minnesota did have quarterback Christian Ponder in the lineup. The rookie was questionable because of a hip pointer.
Ponder threw two touchdowns in Minnesota's 34-28 loss to Detroit but was replaced by Joe Webb in the third quarter after Ponder turned the ball over for a fourth time.
Webb was 12 of 23 for 81 yards and a touchdown and rushed for another, but fumbled the ball away while on the 1 yard line on the final play of the game.
Detroit was without starting running back Kevin Smith because of his injured right ankle.
The Lions didn't have safety Louis Delmas (right knee) or cornerback Chris Houston (left knee) for a second straight game as expected. Rookie defensive tackle Nick Fairley was inactive after being listed as questionable with an injured left foot.
