LOS ANGELES -- UCLA Bruins forward Travis Wear returned to practice Monday after missing most of last week with a skin infection on his foot and is expected to play Tuesday against UC Irvine after sitting out the last two games.

Wear, a 6-foot-10 sophomore transfer from North Carolina who is second on the team in scoring with 10.6 points per game, was hospitalized last Tuesday and Wednesday when a gash on his toe became irritated and swelled up. He originally injured the toe during a snorkeling mishap while the Bruins were in Hawaii for the Maui Invitational.

"I was planning on playing last game, but I guess for precautionary reasons because they didn't want to make it worse," Wear said.

Wear cut his foot while snorkeling on Nov. 25. The cut required stitches, but Wear played two games with the stitches in. He had the stitches removed Dec. 7 and played Dec. 10 against Pennsylvania. After practice last Tuesday, however, his foot began to swell and the team trainer took him to the hospital. Doctors admitted him and treated him with intravenous antibiotics. He missed victories against Eastern Washington and UC Davis.

"I never really got nervous, but it seemed pretty serious now that I look back on it," Wear said.
